My Search for a Toxin-Free Deodorant that Actually Works
Dum-dum-daaaaaah! I think I found it…!
A long, long time ago… well, really just a couple of years ago, give or take a few, I stumbled upon information about commercial deodorants and antiperspirants that stated that practically all store-bought products contain REALLY HARMFUL toxins that are totally messing up our hormones and possibly (probably) carcinogenic to boot. Yikes!
In researching for this article, the information I could gather is that there is in fact harmful aluminium and parabens in deodorants and antiperspirants, however in very, very small quantities. There have been only a small handful of studies performed, on rather small groups, and with conflicting results. I could not find any studies performed since 2014 at all…!
One thing that did appear to be of common agreeance throughout all the articles however, was that reducing the amount of exposure to harmful chemicals by choosing natural alternatives is a good thing to do.
“If you can find a natural deodorant that does not contain parabens or aluminium and works just as well for you, then by all means do so. Reducing intake of any sort of chemical is something I wouldn’t discourage. It is really up to the individual.”
– Professor Elsick, article by Huffington Post.
Back to my story of joyous discovery! Having decided I wanted to switch to a toxin-free deodorant, I Googled around and found loads of DIY recipes for making your own toxin free stink-be-gone. Turns out though, I just didn’t quite have the time available to give it a go.
So, I did some more Googling for brands selling already made toxin-free deodorants and settled on a product that received the most rave-reviews. Purchased it and gave it a try.
I lasted about two hours before I gave in and had to put on my old toxin-full deo.
By the end of the day I couldn’t wait to get home and jump in the shower. This toxin-free deodorant just did not work 🙁
Over the next 12 months I tried a few more toxin-free deodorants, all with the same disappointing outcome. Now, to be fair, I really struggled to find a normal, commercially available toxic deodorant that worked for me so it may be that I just have mutant sweat pores that refuse to conform to perfectly working products which is why I’m not mentioning any of the brands that didn’t work for me.
As many of you would no doubt know, eco-friendly, toxin free products are usually more expensive thank the high-demand commercially available products. I’m happy to pay a little more for a product I understand contains superior quality ingredients and that is safer on my health and/or the environment. However, after going through 4 or 5 products that I used once and then ditched because they didn’t work, my bank account and I were VERY reluctant to keep trying new products. So my search for a toxin-free deodorant stalled.
*time flashing by…* – Whoosh! It’s now around maybe 1.5 years later and other areas in my life have continued to successfully flip over to toxin-free and eco-friendly living. It has become a trend to live toxin-free and eco-friendly which is GREAT! (happy hippie face!) People are becoming more self-aware of their impact on the planet and on their own health. Demand is growing for all sorts of… let’s just say ‘hippie products’ so I don’t have to keep writing toxin-free and eco-friendly ;p – I can even find organic coriander which I’m soooo excited about! But I digress…
I discovered this online store via Facebook ads that had locked in on my interest in hippie products (thank you facey!) called Nourished Life and O.M.G I am in online heaven! Seriously, check it out.
One day I saw a post from NL on Fb about their “best -selling natural deodorant” being back in stock. This reignited my quest to be stink free naturally!
As I’m late in discovering NL, most of the products already have tons of helpful reviews on them so I headed on over to the product page to investigate. Sure enough, there were heaps of 4-5 star reviews for this product. I promptly added it to my Wish List and then mulled over “should I or shouldn’t I” for another couple of months, still skeptical as to if it would work for my mutant armpits.
Well, as you probably guessed from the title of this blog post, I finally gave in and ordered it in the Boxing Day sales and yep, I LOVE IT!
‘Black Chicken Remedies Axilla Deodorant Paste’ is the name of the miraculous product. It has a musky-herby kind of scent that was nothing like I was expecting. I was a little worried it would be a bit overpowering but it’s not. I quite like the smell of it now 🙂
It’s super easy to put on, I just use the end of the handle on my tweezers to scrape out a pea-sized ball of paste (so I don’t get it stuck under my fingernails!), and then use my fingers to rub it into my underarm. I actually love putting it on as it feels devine and super moisturising. I feel like I’m pampering my armpits :p
Verdict is, I finally found a great toxin-free deodorant that works. Whether or not conventional deodorants are harmful or not, I feel good about my choice and I don’t stink :p
